I wrote about the Japanese art of Forest Bathing, Shinrin Yoku. With a twist.

Forst bathing has been launched in Japan as a national health program and decades of studies have been showing how being in the forest is medicine. It reduces cortisol, chronic stress, anxiety, improves immunity.

Forest Bathing in Japan is prescribed by doctors when patient shows signs of chronic stress.

This by itself is a reason to truly look at Forest Bathing as a medicine, as a healing modality to keep us healthy and happier.

And the twist?

The twist is that you can access the Forest medicine even without leaving your home. We all have a Forest within, an imaginal forest. And we can reach it via the most underestimated healing tool we all have: our imagination.

In our culture imagination is for kids. It’s considered something cute. In indigenous and shamanic cultures, journeying with our imagination is how we heal.

Reading the 25th anniversary edition of the Highly Sensitive Person boon by Dr. Elaine Aron.

There is so much good information in the introduction where Dr. Aron summarizes the new research findings since her first edition in 1996.

She has been a pioneer in the characterization of Sensory Processing Sensitivity as a genetically determined trait present in around the 20% of the individuals. That’s is what with time has been called to be a highly sensitive person (HSP).

And this trainer is not only present humans. It has been identified in more than one hundred species.

Why a trait that makes people processing reality deeper was actually selected and maintained?

There is a lot of research in the field, and the easy response is because it is useful and beneficial for the wider community.

In ancient society HSPs were probably the healers, the protectors and clairvoyant ones. The ones who were able to simply know that a leaf was ting to be poisonous, that a predator was close.

People able to perceive the subtle are protectors of the wider community, even if in the western society this has been describe as too much, grow a thicker skin, weakness etc.

WABI SABI means finding beauty in imperfection. It’s about not only not hiding what is cracked, but highlighting it with the most precious thing: GOLD.

We will learn about Kintsugi and then practice hands on. We will break a bowl, and then mend it with gold.

Kintsugi is a practice of mindfulness. We don’t have control on how the ceramic will break, or how the resin glue with gold will shape the breaks.

My New Moon in Leo altar.

Leo is not only my rising. Leo is that child like inner wonder and joy that has been always a big trademark of who I am. And what others have seen in me.

Years of pain and suffering feel like sometimes have dimmed that light. But this year started for me with the intention to be a sunbeam. Find what makes me alive.

It’s already August my friends!

Peak of summer, fruits ripening, nature harvesting all the good work done in the summer. Peak of abundance, nourishment, bright days.

I have to be honest in that the last few weeks felt for me far from abundant. The exhaustion, lack of focus was real.

I realized that I poured all that I had in launching my first online offering, but I didn’t do a good job in self care.

And I felt just lost on the ether, empty and disconnected.

This can be so real for highly sensitive people. When we don’t attentively manage our exhaustion then we reach emptiness, flatness, the feeling of floating.

Does it happen to you too?

This week I wanted to remind myself and you all that we are not invisible to the more than human world. That animals and trees experience us, see us, perhaps sing or bark or talk about us. Our existence matters.

To be in relationship with the natural world matters. We use to think about relationships as human to human. What if this month was about relationship with all?

With the flowers you encounter, leaves, fruit. We lost touch with this more than human family that is patiently always there for us.

What I have to say on the Modern Yoga Essentials course 👇

In the last month I brought you with me in my journey thru the Modern Yoga Essentials course by @heartandbonesyoga.

This course has been responding to something deeply seated in me as a yoga teacher. In the last year I have been craving knowing more not just about anatomy, but about how anatomy informs movement.

To be honest, this course is a game changer for me.

And I have been trying to freshen up anatomy content while teaching for a long time. Every time I was working on one body part in particular, I was reviewing the anatomy atlas and the basics.

What was missing for me was the functional piece. All good to know muscle names and bones but … how does movement impact the body? How we can move functionally? How can we use the body parts in RELATIONSHIP to each other?

That was the missing ring in my chain. And now I feel an entire universe has opened for me. Helping me to teach better and alls to take better care of myself.

I was already on the path of moving away from yoga being this display of flexibility, of working hard towards a shape just because.

But this course gave me language and foundations: the goal is to make movement sustainable and useful for most bodies. It’s not just something we coltivate in a mat to look bendy, it’s day to day life support.

Reflections on the Modern Yoga Essentials course 👇

Part 2!

So so grateful and her team @heartandbonesyoga❤️ we had a creator cohort call last week and … again, wow!

I have been looking for the realness and relatability for a long time!

Since I started spending more time online, I rarely found a yoga teacher and school that I felt so aligned with. Why?

Many reasons.not in any specific order:

❤️ speaking up about social justice and system of power while still not being divisive
❤️ being real about yoga teachings, making them useful for the day to life versus looking a certain way
❤️ playfulness and irony and fun that makes practicing feel… human! And not a performance
❤️ a masterful knowledge of anatomy and functional anatomy, shared in a way that is understandable and you can put in practice

And so many more.

I felt I could also ask questions that were a bit … off topic and potentially controversial like trauma informed cuing and how we can be trauma informed without being terrified of saying anything. And I could have a heart to heart conversation that truly unblocked something in me.

Thank you Brea and team @heartandbonesyoga ❤️ I’ll keep learning and practicing from you.

Reflections on the Modern Yoga Essentials course 👇

Part 2!

So so grateful and her team @heartandbonesyoga❤️ we had a creator cohort call last week and … again, wow!

I have been looking for the realness and relatability for a long time!

Since I started spending more time online, I rarely found a yoga teacher and school that I felt so aligned with. Why?

Many reasons.not in any specific order:

The shoulder complex is truly a masterpiece of anatomical architecture.

Being the most mobile joint in the body it needs to be stable and mobile, with the help of a lot of muscles and structures all around.

I learnt this very satisfying shoulder blade mobility floss. Give it a try!

Healthy scapulas mean healthy and supported movements of our shoulders and spine.

Armpits of power might be one of my favorite discoveries from the Modern Yoga Essentials course by @heartandbonesyoga .

It refers to engaging, wrapping the outer armpit in so that they can envelop and support the shoulder complex.

It was a game changer in cuing asanas like all 4s, plank, down dog and others.

The action cue here is just wrap the outer armpit in as you press the floor away and the hands far from each other.

Give it a try and you’ll feel how rock strong the arms and shoulders become with this setup.

I was practicing power yoga at that time, and how much you could bring your back tie close to the ground was work as a badge of success.

As a teacher, I value very profoundly for practices to be inclusive and sustainable.

In the Modern Yoga Essentials by @heartandbonesyoga course I really found a home! Who cares how profound is the lunge?

If we push our front foot into the ground we active the posterior chain, bringing stability to the pelvis. We can then evaluate where is our pelvis mix and pursue a neutral position there.

What this foundation is in place, and only then we can slide femur and pelvis backward. This way our lunge doesn’t live rent free in our spine. The movement doesn’t come by our lumbar spine coming in to save the day.

This means the lunge might seem smaller. That’s how refined and isolated movement works.

So grateful for this perspective ❤️

Most likely yes! And by now I know that lack of mobility in one place causes movement to show up somewhere else.

Take the thoracic spine. If we do not learn to twist from the thoracic portion of the spine we most likely will twist from the toraco-lumbar junction.

But that junction is not made to rotate is made to move like a hinge. This is a very precious lesson.

The lumbar spine is naturally mobile and as such tends to take over and compensate for lack of mobility of the thoracic spine. Hence, we might experience pain there.

I have always felt the traditionally cued Warrior I didn’t work for my body. My knee was rotating and pulling a lot.

Just sharing this snippet from the Modern Yoga Essentials course by @heartandbonesyoga .

It’s a very valuable tidbit, full of action based cue that can help students to create a strong foundation for this asana. And once again avoid that it lives rent free in the spine.

What does engage your core even mean???

It’s likely we have been cuing this or heard this from classes we have been taking. I didn’t truly realize how abstract of a cue this is.

In the Modern Yoga Essential course I learnt that something simple and pleasant like laughter can allow our deep core muscles to engage.

Try this with me: a little laugh even a fake laugh. Do you notice your ribs tucking in and down, stacking up on top of your hips? This is what allow deep core muscles like the TA (transversus abdominis) to be engaged.

And why that’s important? Because to have distal mobility we need proximal stability. To be able to lift a leg we need a stable spine and core, otherwise the movement will be showing up somewhere else.

The body is so intelligent that pursues that path of least resistance. It’s so important to be away of what parts of the body need to be stable to create the possibility of sustainable movement elsewhere in the body.

It all comes down to make the brain aware of the body. Such a fascinating journey.
