What the Chrysalis Knew: A Highly Sensitive Person and the Architecture That Changed Everything

Two weeks ago I came home from a camping trip undone. The heat and everything going the wrong way truly destroyed my sensitive body and nervous system. I wrote about it here, and many of you recognized yourselves in it immediately. Some people shared with me that they felt seen in that exhaustion that bring tears just at the corner of your eyes, ready to be shed. The persistent sense that something was wrong with you for finding it so hard.
This weekend I went back to the forest. Same person. Different architecture. And everything changed.
What Changed for a Highly Sensitive Person the Second Time
Not me. I want to be very clear about that.
I did not arrive at the forest more regulated or more healed than the last time. I arrived as exactly the same highly sensitive person I have always been, the one who absorbs the emotional weather of every room, who processes the world at a depth that costs something, who needs more quiet and more recovery time than most people around her.
And also, the same that literally crumble under heat. few things can bring me to my knees as much as high summer heat.
What was different was the conditions. A different campsite, deeper in the trees. Better gear. A bigger tent. Fresher temperature. A mosquito net for the hammock. Small choices that created a different kind of container for the same sensitive nervous system.
That is all. And it changed everything.
The Chrysalis Night: When a Highly Sensitive Nervous System Finally Found the Right Architecture
The moment I knew this trip was going to be different was the first night in the hammock.
I had strung it between two pines and draped the mosquito net over it, and when I lay down inside it and looked up, something shifted before I even had time to name it. The net around me created a kind of cocoon, gauzy and soft, suspended between the earth and the sky. A chrysalis.
The fireflies had come out and they moved through the dark between the trees like small breathing stars, and the white pines canopy above me was so tall, so cathedral-like in its height and its stillness, that I stopped being a person lying in a hammock and became, for a while, simply part of it.
The mind turned off.
Not because I made it. Because the architecture was finally right.
For a highly sensitive nervous system that is constantly tracking, absorbing, processing, this is not a small thing. The mind turning off without effort is the nervous system's way of saying: here. This is what I needed. This is what I have always needed.
And I feel in a deep sleep, all of sudden.
The Monarch and What She Showed Me About Becoming
The butterfly arrived in the afternoon, as soon as we got home. She just apepared in the backyard. The first we have ever seen this season.
I had been thinking about the chrysalis since the night before, about what it means to be suspended in a container that is exactly right for the transformation you are in the middle of. And then the monarch appeared, the creature that knows better than any other what the chrysalis was for.
She landed briefly on a yellos flower and then was gone.
But I felt it. The thread between the night in the cocoon and this winged, luminous creature moving through the forest light. The chrysalis is not the destination. It is the right architecture for becoming whatever you were always meant to be.
What the right Daily Architecture Does for a Highly Sensitive Nervous System
I have been teaching about stability in my yoga classes this week, and I have been bringing in the inner tree practice as the somatic thread of the teaching.
Because stability for a sensitive nervous system is not rigidity. It is not an armour or becoming less permeable to the world. It is having roots deep enough that when the wind comes you can bend without losing your centre.
The two camping trips taught me this more viscerally than anything I could have designed in a studio.
The first time, the conditions were not supportive and my roots had nowhere to anchor. The second time, I built the container was just right.
A different site, a mosquito net, a bigger tent. Small choices. A deliberate architecture. And the roots found the ground immediately.
Your sensitivity does not need fixing. The daily architecture does.
This is the whole learning I gathered from the forest over time. And it is the reason I built the Sovereign Sensitive Blueprint, three daily rituals rooted in the elements and the inner tree, designed to create the architecture your sensitive nervous system needs not just on the perfect camping weekends but every single ordinary day.
A morning shield to build your roots before the world reaches you.
A midday emerald reset to return to your source when the day has depleted you.
An evening wash away to release what was never yours to carry and call yourself home before sleep.
Portable. Available in video and audio. Your chrysalis, wherever you go.
The Inner Tree Practice: Stability for a Highly Sensitive Nervous System
Try this right now, wherever you are.
Feel the points of contact between your body and whatever is holding it. The chair beneath you, the floor under your feet. From those points, imagine roots growing downward, long and warm, into nourishing earth below.
Notice the length of your spine, the trunk of your inner tree rising from those roots. Feel its quiet strength. Its capacity to hold you upright without effort.
And notice above you, the canopy of your inner tree filtering what reaches you, letting in the light you need, offering gentle shade from what is too much.
Three breaths here. On each inhale, draw nourishment up from the roots. On each exhale, let the canopy settle around you.
This is what stability feels like for a sensitive nervous system. Not an armour. Roots.
A final reflection
I came home from this camping trip different from the last one. Not because I am different. Because I built different conditions. Because I finally understood that my sensitivity was never the thing that needed changing.
The architecture was.
If something in this post felt true to your experience, the Sovereign Sensitive Blueprint was built for exactly that recognition.
The pre-order founding circle is open at $37 until this Wednesday July 15. The full sanctuary unlocks July 18.
